We stop checking for MONSTERS under the bed when we finally realise life’s scariest MONSTERS are the ones we create inside ourselves.
If we choose to fight the MONSTERS we discover within ourselves in adult life, we must ensure that we don’t become MONSTERS in the process.
Unfortunately, children are too often exposed to MONSTROUS behavior from adult caregivers. Like installing an “app” in a brand-new computer, a child’s brain downloads MONSTROUS grown-ups behavior involuntarily. In adult life we either fight or flight from the MONSTER downloads we discover with ourselves.
I personally have been guilty of both behaviours. Fighting and flighting. Fighting my internal demons, my MONSTROUS fear-fuelled childhood “apps” installed through violence and pedophilia. And, flighting from them. I mean running away from myself using booze and drugs as my escape partners. Neither works long-term. Temporarily fight and flight enables us to survive, yes. But live, no. There is a use by date in adult life for the fight and flight survival reflexes.
Eventually we have to face our internal MONSTERS, turn our internal lights (enlightenment), stop punching in the dark and running, and finally come home. Blaming and shaming past MONSTERS keeps us stuck in the fight and we become hard work for ourselves and others to be around.
Once we surrender to the truth that we are now responsible for all our MONSTROUS adult behavior, nobody else, only then do our scary inner MONSTERS become parts of ourselves we make peace with, and eventually even begin to see with kindness and gratitude.
How do we uninstall the MONSTER “apps” we carry into adulthood?
With honesty, open-mindedness and a willingness to ask for help. When we are ready to replace fear with love, and put our heart’s authentic desire to become who we always dreamt we could be before our ego we commence to see great change. As E.E. Cummings reminds us …
“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”
