Naive

To be described as natural and innocent in speech and/or behaviour because we are young or inexperienced is what we also call being NAÏVE.

Forrest Gump the movie was a beautiful portrayal of a pure and NAÏVE heart. Forrest was inexperienced in the ways of the world and looked at Jenny, the one he loved, with an open and innocent heart.

Too many of us have used the word NAÏVE as an insult towards ourselves when our love or trust has been rejected or damaged. However, so very often we were simply inexperienced in how to emotionally self-care.

We live and learn as we love however, no two loves are ever exactly the same. A person’s heart is like a foreign land we must familiarise ourselves with. So when it comes to new loves exiting and entering our lives it is natural to feel a little anxious, awkward and overwhelmed.

To feel NAÏVE as we trek new emotional territory in love and life is a gift. Unless we embrace our own NAIVETY how can we ever welcome in new experiences and continue learning as we mature?

The state of feeling NAÏVE if we are lucky will kiss our hearts from time to time, indicating that the innate innocence within us all is alive and well. And that is a beautiful thing, especially as we age.

Those of us who close our hearts to learning become cynical “know it alls” depriving ourselves of genuine enchantment and natural delights.

May we welcome life’s sometimes-spontaneous opportunities where the gift of innocence and inexperience encourages us to explore new virgin heartlands.

So moving forward, why not embrace the lessons we learn through our inexperience and NAIVETY, for life truly is like a box of chocolates as Forrest’s mother so wisely advised …

“You just never know what you’re gonna get.”
