Most of us are not slow learners, we are just quick forgetters.
REMINDING ourselves to remember to listen to and honour our innate truth is an art that does not come easily for some of us in our noisy, busy, everyday lives.
Instant gratification can seem more efficient when we are anxious or in a hurry. Ironically it is at these moments in our lives when we need to slow ourselves down, stop listening to our fears and become gentle and loving towards ourselves. If we were with someone we loved whom became anxious, unsure of themselves and their ability or in such a frantic hurry they were missing the obvious, our calm, patient, gentle assertive tone has a better chance of helping them than if we become silent and submissive or elevated and aggressive.
When we are fearful in our anxiety-driven forgetfulness we go temporarily insane. Often just long enough to reach for instant gratification via weapons of mass distraction that can take the form of excessive food or addictive substances, or some of us choose an unhealthy sexual experience. Lost in this forgetfulness, we easily become confused in our thinking and are unable to say “No” when something truly harmful to our wellbeing is posing as a supportive and loving option.
A routine of healthy REMINDERS are not so much about self-deprivation, but more about self-love. When we interrupt old patterns by REMINDING ourselves of something beautiful and emotionally safe and nourishing we emotionally recentre ourselves.
So I have handpicked my top 10 Emotional Fitness REMINDERS that help me rebalance whenever I loose my emotional centre of gravity. Why not create your own tailor-made list, or feel free to use mine if it is helpful?
1. First and foremost be true to myself, then I’m not bullshitting anyone else
2. No life is less valuable or beautiful than any other – not even mine.
3. It is OK to be alone or pull back from the world. Solitude is healthy and necessary for emotional self-care.
4. Confusion and anxiety are alarms that I am in new territory, ready for new growth, so I need to go slow, be kind, patient, and do my research so I can establish safety in this new phase. I do not have to have all the answers right now. Deciding not to decide is sometimes the wisest choice.
5. What other people think of me is none of my business.
6. I am good enough.
7. Stay present. Try not to dwell on the past or worry about the future. Take everything one day at a time.
8. If I carry the bricks of my past with me I will build the same house in my present to trap me in my future.
9. Not getting what I want is sometimes the best thing that could happen.
10. It is always darkest before the dawn.
The only way we can be guaranteed to find peace when the shit hits the fan in our lives is to create it within ourselves, regardless of the chaos around us. A true friend REMINDS us of our value when we feel lost and afraid. When we become better friends to ourselves we become Emotionally Fitter and self-supporting as we REMIND ourselves of what really matters to us.
Let’s not forget the healthy life lessons that have endured the test of time, for they are our priceless, friendly REMINDERS handy not to forget when we lose our way.
